Superb Adhesives for Art Conservation
Beva® 371 Solution:
The most widely used, stable adhesive for paintings.
Description:
BEVA® 371 SOLUTION - The only adhesive specifically formulated to meet the requirements of art conservation, and since 1970 the most widely used the world over. Extensively tested and published in the professional literature. It is reversible and can be reactivated by heat, or solvent. BEVA® is the standard adhesive for lining, and can be applied to both the old canvas and the new support.
Beva® 371 Film:
Homogenous, dry film of Beva® 371 Solution, for paintings, paper and textiles.
Description:
Pure BEVA® 371 Solution in film form. The film comes sandwiched between a white silicone-coated paper and a Mylar release sheet. The transparent support allows the film to be cut precisely to any shape, to be inserted into loose areas, or for delaminating paint to be proper aligned - all before the film is heat-activated. Ideal for transparent lining of paintings, also for textile and paper conservation.
Reversibility:
BEVA® 371 Film can be removed from absorbent surfaces using hexane or acetone, provided these solvents do not damage the art work involved. It is also reversible by heat and low-aromatic petroleum solvents. BEVA® 371 Film (2.5 mil) is available in 27" wide, 20' -long rolls and 54" - wide, 20' - long rolls. BEVA® Film (1.0 mil) is available in 27"- wide, 20' - long rolls.
Beva® D-8 Dispersion:
Aqueous, non-toxic adhesive for large applications.
Description:
BEVA® D-8 Dispersion, an aqueous, non-ionic dispersion which consists mainly of an ethylene vinyl acetate emulsified by a volatile material which evaporates during drying, without leaving a residue. Application in dispersion permits the use of resins of still higher viscosity and greater flexibility than BEVA® 371. However, BEVA® D-8 requires more aromatic mixtures for removal than BEVA® 371.
Beva® TEX:
A non-woven polyester fabric which is coated on one side with BEVA® 371. It is designed for conservation of works on paper, on fabrics and of paintings.
Description:
BEVA® TEX is a non-woven polyester fabric which is coated on one side with BEVA® 371.It is designed for conservation of works on paper, on fabrics and of paintings. It is applied with low heat and is completely reversible.
BEVA® TEX is available in sheets 27 inches by 36 inches. Longer pieces are available on request.

Beva® GEL
For cold linings of paintings and murals.
Description:
BEVA® GEL is an aqueous dispersion of acrylic and EVA resins. In its pure form, or diluted with water, BEVA® GEL is an excellent water-based adhesive dispersion, easy to apply, with good slip, and adhesion to a very wide range of surfaces. When partially dried, BEVA® GEL turns into a strong contact adhesive with excellent adhesive to canvas, polyester, and BEVA®-coated surfaces. To achieve this, high-molecular polymers were incorporated in its formula, which give it the desired tackiness and retention of solvents. For these reasons, it dissolves only slowly.
When fully dried, BEVA® GEL turns into a heat-seal adhesive, with the same low-activation temperature as that of BEVA® 371 (60-65°C, 150-160°F). BEVA® GEL, BEVA® 371, and BEVA® D-8 adhere to each other in every form of application.

Reversibility:
BEVA® GEL can be reversed with water, toluene, xylene, iso-propyl alcohol, or ethanol. This facilitates clean-up and corrections. Spraying with any or all of the above solvents reverts the dried adhesive back to the gel form, and makes it reusable as a contact adhesive. If the effect of any of these solvents is undesirable or the time required objectionable, the solution is to coat the surfaces to be joined with a layer of BEVA® 371 Solution first. This makes it possible to remove the lining using heat or naphtha, if and when necessary.
Reversibility:
BEVA® D-8 dries to a clear, colorless film which is not soluble in water. It was tested extensively and found to be removable in toluene and xylene. After prolonged accelerated aging its solubility increases, and BEVA® D-8 becomes soluble also in alcohol, indicating that during aging the breakage of cross links exceeds their formation.
Mixture of toluene, alcohol, and mineral spirits will remove BEVA® D-8 from porous materials without leaving a residue. Useful for textiles and strip-lining. An aqueous emulsion, it is sensitive to freezing and should be stored with this in mind.
